Career Awareness Workshops

Through hands-on workshops young people have the chance to experience the realities of skilled trade and technology work.* The Career Awareness Workshops are held on Elementary Technology Day in conjunction with the Ontario Technological Skills Competition, and are intended for students in grades 7 & 8.

Workshops are designed to increase the students’ awareness of the many career opportunities that exist in the skilled trades and technologies. Workshops topics cover all four sectors of Skilled Trades (Construction, Industrial, Transportation and Services) as well as Technology. The one thing all workshops have in common is that they give students a glimpse into a future career by providing a hands-on experience. Below are some examples of workshops that have been offered in previous years.

  • Fun with Wood - Students had the chance to see and learn about the wonderful world of wood by finding out about the many functions of wood in today’s world. Students also had the opportunity to create a game/project they could take home with them.
  • Restaurant Services – Students learned about the many aspects of restaurant services including; Bar Tending by mixing Shirley Temple drinks; Place Setting by learning to fold napkins into several shapes and setting a table with 7 distinct pieces of silverware as well as service by participating in a relay race.
  • Industrial Mechanic Millwright - Students participated in a discussion of apprenticeships and the education needed to enter the skilled trades, followed by a hands-on assembly of pneumatic bubble gum machines.
  • Automotive Services – Students learned how to safely jack a vehicle, change a flat tire, stow the flat tire, boost a battery and check vehicle fluids and levels. They also got to see air bag detonated.
  • Culinary Arts – Students had the opportunity to make a pizza from scratch.
  • Piping Skills – Students had the opportunity to discover different methods of joining pipe, explored how faucets, pipe threading and tube bending worked.

Students will also have the opportunity to take part in the Careers Showcase, which will include a variety of hands-on, interactive displays.
