Elementary Career Awareness Workshops at the Ontario Technological Skills Competition at Waterloo's RIM Park

Through hands-on workshops, young people have the chance to experience the realities of skilled trade and technology work. The Career Awareness Workshops are held on Elementary Technology Day, May 5, 2014, in conjunction with the Ontario Technological Skills Competition at RIM Park in Waterloo, and are intended for students in grades 7 and 8.

Workshops are designed to increase the students’ awareness of the many career opportunities that exist in the skilled trades and technologies. Workshop topics cover four sectors of Skilled Trades (Construction, Industrial, Transportation and Services), as well as Technology. The one thing all workshops have in common is that they give students a glimpse into a future career by providing a hands-on experience. Below are some examples of workshops that have been offered in previous years.

  • Fun with Wood - Students had the chance to see and learn about the wonderful world of wood by finding out about the many functions of wood in today’s world. Students also had the opportunity to create a game/project they could take home with them.
  • Automotive Services – Students learned how to safely jack a vehicle, change a flat tire, stow the flat tire, boost a battery and check vehicle fluids and levels. They also got to see air bag deployment.
  • Culinary Arts – Students had the opportunity to make a pizza from scratch.
  • Piping Skills – Students discovered different methods of joining pipe and explored how faucets, pipe threading and tube bending worked.

Students also tour the Career Exploration Showcase, which includes a variety of hands-on, interactive displays.

Affiliated elementary schools are given the opportunity to register up to two groups of 20 students to participate in either the morning or afternoon session.  The date for this year's Elementary Workshops is Monday, May 5, 2014. For more information, please email ontario@skillscanada.com.
