Team Ontario brings back 36 medals from 2018 Skills Canada National Competition in Edmonton

Jun 6 2018

Waterloo, OntarioEarlier this week, Team Ontario converged on Edmonton, Alberta for the Skills Canada National Competition, June 4-5. Seventy competitors in secondary and post-secondary levels, along with 60 advisors and parents represented Ontario well with their skills, talent, and team spirit.

Team Ontario is the largest team at the Skills Canada National Competition, sending a competitor for every contest area in secondary and post-secondary levels, and the team always does very well in medal placings. 2018 continued that trend with Team Ontario earning 36 medals in 44 contest areas, 15 gold medals, 16 silver, and 5 bronze.

Ian Broomfield of Centennial College, won gold in the Outdoor Powered Equipment contest (Post-Secondary level), and was also honoured with the Best of Region award for Ontario.

The all-girls robotics team from Madonna Catholic Secondary School in Toronto won silver, after a very competitive final in the tournament against Team Saskatchewan, and for the third year in a row, the two-person Mechatronics team from Humber College won gold in that contest.

This year was a qualifying year for the WorldSkills Competition. New for this year, the top two eligible competitors will have a chance to qualify for the 2019 WorldSkills Competition in Kazan, Russia at the 2019 Skills Canada National Competition. The 2019 Skills Canada National Competition will be held at the Halifax Exhibition Centre, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, May 28 – 29.
