Youth explore skilled trades and technologies one hands-on activity at a time

Jul 4 2016

July 2016 -- This summer, almost 400 students going into grades seven, eight, and nine will begin exploring a future career in the skilled trades and technologies at the Skills Work!® Summer Camps, hosted across the province in partnership with Hydro One and many local colleges and other industry organizations.

The Skills Work!® Summer Camp program has been running since 2000 and gives  campers the opportunity to participate in skilled trades and technologies workshops, industry tours, meet local mentors and learn more about a career path in the skilled trades. Each camp hosts a range of different workshops and tours, depending on the specialization of the host college or industry facility, making for a truly unique and engaging camp. Workshops could include heavy equipment and construction, GIS and horticulture, aviation, LEGO Robotics, culinary arts and more, as well as games and entrepreneurship activities.

The week-long camps conclude each Friday with a Camper Showcase from 2:30 - 4 p.m., where campers can highlight their projects to parents, college VIPs, media, and others. Skills Ontario offers all-girls and all-boys camps, as well as a Francophone camp in Sudbury at Collège Boréal and an Aboriginal-focused camp held in Wikwemikong on Manitoulin Island – both new locations for this year. Other new camps were added this year at Magna Exteriors Inc. in Concord, Canadore College in North Bay, and the Georgian College campus in Owen Sound.

“The goal of the Skills Work! Summer Camps is to introduce these young campers to a range of career possibilities. The camp is all about making discoveries and learning new skills,” says Karen Throupe, Summer Camp Manager at Skills Ontario. “Young people need to know that the trades and technologies offer many opportunities that can lead to bright, stable and successful futures.”
