Contest Dates
Home Participation
Depending on the existing COVID-19 regulations/uncertainties that are in place from May 25th – May 30th; the following format and process will be implemented:
Pre-Approved to Compete from Home
Based on safety and conversations with the National Technical Committees, some contests have been pre-approved to be safe to compete from home. These are highlighted green in following chart.
NOT Pre-Approved
These contests have to be completed from a classroom or industry setting
For contests that are highlighted in yellow, Skills Ontario has indicated to Skills Canada these competitors will likely be competing from home. All non pre-approved contests (yellow or white highlighting), will require special approval and safety forms from Skills Canada if required to compete from home.
Competitors will be asked on the registration forms if they require to compete from home if the lock down is not lifted for after May 20th
Mandatory vs Recommend Proctors
Mandatory Proctor
- It is noted in the Contest Description for each specific contest what the requirements are for a proctor for that individual contest
- Some only request to assist in:
- Safety
- No cheating
- Taking pictures and submitting
For other contests it is specific that the proctor must have the matching skill set of the contest. If a proctor can not be found to have the matching skill set of the contest, then special permission must be acquired by Skills Canada.
Recommended Proctor
If a competitor chooses or can not have a proctor available (ex. competing from home), they will have to take on the additional workload of the proctor tasks, such as taking pictures and submitting documents.
Contest Material Packages
Some contests will have packages of materials that will be shipped to competitors or proctors for use during the competition. A shipping address will be requested during the registration process.
Material Per Diem
Some contests will have a per diem provided to them for the purchase of contests materials, as they could not be shipped. These materials can be costly, and host locations will be reimbursed via EFT from Skills Ontario/Skills Canada. The contact person for this will be requested during the Proctor Registration.
If the material costs for these contests are more then the per diem, it will be reviewed by SCC on individual basis.
Shirts
Team Ontario Shirts
During registration, competitors will be asked for their shirt size as Team Ontario shirts will be shipped to each competitor using the address provided in the form. The shirts must be worn during live orientation, on contest days, as well as during your introductory video. The only exception is for contests that require PPE or items such as chef's jackets worn over the t-shirt.
SCVNC Souvenir Shirts
If you would like a souvenir shirt to commemorate your achievement in participating in the SCVNC, you will be provided with a link in your welcome e-mail to register for one. You are not automatically registered - it is a separate form that must be completed by May 30th, 2021.
Introduction Videos
On June 15th, Skills Canada will host a vFairs event that is open to the public. For provincials, we recorded the live contests and edited those and included some of the submissions to showcase on our vFairs. Nationals will only be showcasing Introduction Videos, submitted from each of the competitors; there will be no recordings of contests on June 15. This is not mandatory, and you may wish to do it if you choose. By providing an introduction video you will be showcasing Team Ontario, yourself and your skill set, as well as the educational institution in which you are representing! We recommend if your are comfortable, to participate and show your pride in being on Team Ontario and for #SkilledTrades and Technologies!
Secondary
- Skills Ontario will be communicating with all secondary competitors to provide instructions for your video and how to submit
- Skills Ontario will submit your videos to SCC
- The member organizations are assisting with secondary videos, compared to PS submitted on their own, as secondary students are under the age of 18
Post-Secondary - The below is noted in the PS Competitor Guide which will be in the Welcome Email
- To promote each post-secondary competitor for our SCVNC online virtual event on June 15, with the help of their proctor, we invite each competitor to record a short introduction video that will be showcased in the skill event booth at the virtual event. Please review the Competitor Introduction Video document attached to the welcome email which includes all the informationneeded in order to submit this video.
Devices
Competitors will need to use their own computer in order to compete in certain skill areas. Specification on the type of computer to use will be stated in the contest description. Skills Canada is not responsible for any stolen or damaged computer. Competitors must bring their computer at orientation for testing and to ensure it will work properly for the next day.
All software must already be installed on the computer. SCC will not supply any software for the contest. If a competitor computer malfunction (hardware or software), the Proctor, the NTC, and SCC will make every effort to resolve the issue. It will be the competitor’s responsibility to have at his/her disposal a back-up device if he/she wishes to. If a computer malfunction and time is lost, the Proctor and NTC will allow extra time at the end of the competition to a maximum of 1 hour.
